The Studio

Two mottoes characterise the work in this architecture workshop: to create an architecture that fits seamlessly into the fabric of the city and that considers the concerns of the people meant to live or work in these buildings in future. Key here is the search for the best solution, including tailored adjustments to individual needs.

Such cohesive concepts do not originate on the computer: prior to the draft and the technical planning, the idea develops here at Marc Kocher Architekten, and this always beyond the limits of all available software tools in freehand drawings. A sustained, sophisticated and multifaceted design concept matures in detailed sketches, drawings and lovingly painted watercolours over a short period of time. This is subsequently planned in detail in digital form with an eye to aspects integral to planning and realisation.

Team

Marc Kocher has gathered members in his agency, often comprised of employees of many years; they are primarily from Italy, because these architects share an understanding for those fundamental rules of building that have remained unchanged for centuries and were learned by Kocher in his years with Aldo Rossi. This practised team cultivates classic architectural methodology as much as the tools of digital planning, with the aim of creating sophisticated designs that are continually improved in joint discussions.

Marc Kocher

Marc Kocher, born in Bern. He was employed in the Milan office of Aldo Rossi, a formative influence on European post-war modernity, and at the same time a prominent representative of Italian Razionalismo and later of the emerging post-modernism, even before completing his studies at the ETH Zurich. Kocher here acquired familiarity with and a rich understanding of urban planning and architecture with access to all eras of architecture that accompanies him to the present day. In this Italian period he participated in, among other projects, the reconstruction of the classicist opera house La Fenice in Venice, which burned down in 1996. He was responsible for, among other things, the restoration of the sophisticated interior wall and ceiling decoration.

Following the founding of his own architecture agency in 1997, he developed his own unmistakable language of design in initial building projects in Zurich and Berlin. With the conversion of the Backfabrik, formerly a factory bakery in the Prenzlauer Allee in Berlin, the architect was successful in 2001 with the sensitive transformation of a historical industrial building into a modern office and commercial location. Kocher’s latest projects in Berlin-Weißensee, Berlin-Lichtenberg and Anklam see him moving increasingly toward an urban planning scale. The architect still initially draws all views of his structures by hand. These coloured architectural drawings are an indispensable component of the design process for him.
